Looking Back...The Area Guide Gallery (from the 32nd edition)

Six Among Many: A sampling of the range and professionalism of the area art community.

Lisa Mahan, New Hope, PA

Lisa Mahan works mainly in oils with a primary focus on color and light. Her subject matter ranges from the figure, interiors, landscapes, to the still life. Whether the scene is a scattering of plates and fruit on a tin-top table under a window or a narrative urban scene at dusk, her focus is on the light at that particular time of day and its effect on the colors in the scene. Since 1996, Mahan has exhibited at numerous juried and invitational shows throughout the area, and is a founding member of Artist’s Gallery in Lambertville, where her work can be seen regularly.

Jerry Cable, Flemington, NJ

Jerry Cable was born in northeastern Ohio and discovered his passion for art at an early age. Today his creative spirit thrives in a Hunterdon County studio, nurtured by the rich landscapes and historic buildings of the Delaware Vallery countryside. Resonating with luminous rhythms of light and color, his paintings evoke mood and emotion. Since 1995, Cable has shown in 32 group exhibitions and has had 9 one-man shows. His works are in private and public collections across the United States and Canada. He is represented by Canal Frame-Crafts Gallery, Washington Crossing, PA and Travis Gallery, New Hope, PA, among others.

Timothy Martin, Sergeantsville, NJ

Timothy Martin first gained widespread recognition in 1993 when he was selected by Tiffany & Company to display artwork in their windows on Fifth Avenue. He says of his paintings, “I believe my interpretation of objects out of flowers, plants and animals is perfectly natural, no pun intended.” Since the late 1990s, his work has been reproduced by fine art publishers as posters, giclee prints and note cards. A 1994-95 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship grantee, since 1998 Martin has participated in the Inizio exhibition mounted by the Phoenix Arts Group in Arizona. In 1999, Martin launched his own web site at www.timothymartin.com , which features reproductions as well as original gouaches and oils.

Illia Barger was the 1999 recipient of the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award for excellence in painting. In the same year, the exhibition, Illia Barger: Sacrament, was held at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City to celebrate five paintings installed behind the High Altar and a site-specific, 48 foot long work-on-paper created for the central nave of the Cathedral. Barger has exhibited in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, and her work is in many private and public collections including the Greek Consulate in New York and the Selma Burke Museum of Art in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Her work can be found on www.artspan.com .

Jane Gilday, Wrightstown, PA

Jane Gilday is a painter, musician, and writer, who has been based in the New Hope-Lambertville area for the last decade. She works in three primary directions: landscapes, decorative pattern pieces, and illuminations. Gilday paints onsite and from memory, with most landscapes emerging as syntheses of scenes seen and re-combined into imaginary, but archetypal, vistas. The “illuminated” aspect appears on frames, made by the artist, which are an integral part of the finished work. In the ancient tradition, frames are engraved, decorated, and often gold-leafed and glazed with washes of earthtones. Gilday is represented by the Hrefna Jonsdottir Gallery in Lambertville, NJ.
